This week I have had the pleasure of interviewing Hayley Drakes. Hayley established her business ‘WellBeings’ in 2002 to offer natural holistic therapies to help with stress management, body maintenance and wellbeing. She believes that caring for yourself is not a luxury, it’s a necessity and we should all be giving ourselves some much deserved ‘me time’ and permission to relax and feel balanced. I was interested in learning more about these therapies and how they can benefit our every day lives.
Hayley, I’ve heard of Holistic Therapy but can you explain what makes it different to other forms of therapy?
A few examples of Holistic Therapies you may have heard of are Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, Aromatherapy, Massage Therapy, Ear Candling and Reiki. Holistic Therapies treat the person (or animal) as a whole so not only just the physical body but also the mind and spirit too. Though a particular therapy may be helpful for a physical issue, all holistic therapies aim to provide deep relaxation and allow the mind to have a bit of time off as well as the body.
I’ve heard it’s great for stress, is that correct?
Yes, stress and anxiety can often cause or exacerbate physical problems and this is where the holistic approach really can help. They are a great maintenance and preventative measure and by keeping stress or tension at low levels this surely assists in preventing illness and strengthening the immune system.
Do you think people are often hesitant to try modern therapies?
Funnily enough, most therapies can be traced back many 1000s of years and have quite ancient origins so are anything but ‘new age’. These therapies are also known as complementary therapies as the complement other therapeutic methods, such as medication. If you suspect you have a medical condition, you must consult your Medical Practitioner for a diagnosis. People often seem keen to try new things, especially if a friend has recommended them and I would say 98% of my clients are via word of mouth.
I see there are sections on your website specialising in therpaies for animals, tell me more about that.
My life-long love of horses means I have a particular passion for equine work and enjoy working with much loved equines from family pets to top competition horses. Equine Holistic Therapy can assist performance in work and help a balanced attitude. The combination of Equine Massage and Reiki complement one another perfectly. Most horses display a whole array of signs of relaxation including resting a hind leg, sighing, yawning, snoozing, gurgling abdomen and breaking wind! Reiki means Universal Life Energy and is a Japanese technique for Stress Relief and Relaxation that anyone can learn. The energy flows through the Practitioner and is drawn by the animal. It can be learned by anyone and enhances the body’s natural ability to feel well and in balance on all levels. Animals usually respond very positively to Reiki and may visibly relax or sleep throughout. It seems to be very calming and balancing for their emotions. Sometimes Reiki can give them an energy boost if they are depleted and stimulate appetite if they have been off their food.
